Great essayist, polemicist and atheist Christopher Hitchins has died of throat cancer aged 62.

Like Orwell, took both the left and the right to task for many things. His views on Mother Teresa his stand against fascist dictatorships made me warm to him many years ago.

It's a very sad loss.

It said on the news today that he originally had 'left-wing views'. That amazed me. A more profound transition from a leftie to a rightie I can not think of!

Yes a thoroughly decent chap.I loved the way he could tie Christians in knots a la 'the wheel's spinning but the hamster's dead'.Would have enjoyed a meal at the Ivy with him!

Yep as an undergraduate he was a Trot demanding the overthrow of capitalism. I agree with the positive remarks Andy made.

A sad loss
