Chatting over coffee with a colleague at the weekend and he mentioned that one of the biggest problems with the UK, and most countries, is that theres not enough income to cover what the public all want..... so the choice is simple...

1. Higher tax for all, including higher income tax, VAT, fuel tax etc. and high spending

2. Reduce the tax take and also reduce the government spending to just the 5 main areas, health, education, defence and law & order, pensions.

3. Carry on just how its been doing and every election change direction and waste millions just reinventing things... and never moving forward. The next party in power wastes millions reversing what's just been done!!

Setting aside what they've done since going into coalition, the Lib Dems offered a break from the two-party lockdown at the 2010 election, for the first time in recent memory. However, the public vote and related factors led to very little change in the make up of parliament, beyond the reds and blues swapping over.

So it seems 3 is the most likely answer, no matter how rational and/or appealing 1 or 2 may be to some people.

There's also option 4, where every ? is spent as efficiently and effectively as possible, but that may just be a pipe-dream...

How about increasing the efficiency of revenue collection and look at reducing costs/ waste eg in the criminal justice system.

"so the choice is simple... "

Err, not quite as simple as this...

1. What about More tax for some and lower spending?

Or

2. Increase Revenue efforts on tax evasion?

Or

3. Concentrate on growth funded by 1.

Etc etc.

Cheers

Indeed wouldn't it be good if the government and their finance managers showed respect for their income that one way and another ultimately comes from the pockets of Joe and Joanne Public. The ??? that PFI's, the railway privatisation etc are wasting is appalling.

Then there is 5 - actively working to create real jobs across a spectrum of sectors and grades not sitting back making glib statements assuming private sector jobs would just appear as discussed here. This would cut benefit payouts, reduce our reliance on imports and increase morale. A first step would be ensuring where ever possible public sector purchases were UK manufactured. As things stand with an increasing population and the forthcoming raising of retirement ages the pressure on jobs will only increase.
