From Wikipedia

"In 1999, while working as a commentator in South Africa, Roebuck met three cricketers, all aged 19, and offered to coach them, inviting them to live at his home in England. He warned them beforehand that he would use corporal punishment if they failed to obey his "house rules". He caned all three men on their buttocks at different times for misbehaviour and in 2001 was given a suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to three charges of common assault. He told the court, "Obviously I misjudged the mood and that was my mistake and my responsibility and I accept that."

Nah, he was never a Graham Gooch or Ian Botham. Just a perv who liked looking at young mens arses.

A lot of reports referred obliquely to Roebuck's 'inner demons'. Thankyou Rodders for elaborating them so succinctly.

Interesting. I heard on the radio this morning that Botham couldn't stand him. Imagine what would have happened if he'd try to spank Beefy's arse!

Beefy fell out with Roebuck after he got rid of his drinking / shagging mates at Somerset, Richards and Joel Garner.

He was a top cricket jounalist .Roebuck was in the closset with a liking for young men.He was estranged from his family and when the police came to call he decided to jump out of a window from the 6th floor rather than face an allegation from a young man that he had tried to get in his trousers.Shame he could not have come out he would probably still be alive today.

Nay probs Jonone. Glad to be of assistance. Why the press can't report the facts without skirting around is beyond me.
