My McAfee subscription runs out next week. Can anyone recommend a good product? Are there any free products that do the job?
Even though I am protected I still get a lot of pop-ups....do I need something in addition to the AV software?
Appreciate any advice.

There is an article with a list of 5 free products for windows 7 below, but it should work on any version of windows.

Personally I use Microsoft Security Essentials (XP/Vista/Win7) and have found it to be perfectly adequate

I find Avast does an excellent job, alongside Comodo firewall.

As Twingo said, Microsoft Security Essentials is the best one out of the free versions. Perfectly adequate for most people and it's frequently updated by Microsoft.

Avira and Avast are pretty good ones, stay clear of AVG though!

I and several friends / colleagues use this combination too and they have kept the gremlins out.
I used to use AVG. It worked fine but became increasingly demanding on processor and memory.
