Apple Iphone

For those of you forumites who use the Iphone, this snippet might be of interest.

Read in the Guardian that the Iphone keeps track of where you go and saves every detail to a secret file on the device which is copied to the owner's computer when synchronised. Apparently this feature was implemented as part of the IOS 4 update in summer last year.

The file contains the latitude and longttide of the phone's recorded coordinates along with a timestamp so anyone else who got access to your phone or computer would be able to read this info with a simple software prog.

According to the writer, the Iphone is the only phone they have come across that works like this. Mobile phone networks already record phones' locations but it is only available to the police following a court order. With Apple the information is held as standard on the phone whether you want it or not.

Cheers

Before any Apple users come out with the 'But other phones do this and it's only part of the 'Find my iPhone feature', let me say that Android, MS and Rim phones do do this................but they tell you and you can turn it off! Apple didn't tell anybody and you can't turn it off (yet). Big difference.

Average iPhone user: Oooh, shiny shiny!

Normal person: Apple poisons its workers.

Average iPhone user: Oooh, pretty lights!

Normal person: Apple spies on you.

Average iPhone user: Oooh, silky smoothy, pretty lighty, shiny shiny!!

This tracking feature has been around for a while. It is based on cell-id rather than GPS fitted in some handsets. It's quite accurate in cities, but less so in the countryside.I gave up my iPhone some time ago,as it used to reboot when it felt like it.On the other hand my RIM is fine.

Why is it spying? If I see you in the street at 3pm on a Tuesday, I know what your iPhone does - that you were in that street at that time. All it's doing is writing it down.
Am I a spy for looking at you at the same moment?
Or are you just a bit paranoid :-/

Also, in defence of iPhones, doesn't The Man know where you are anyway what with all the CCTV cameras in the country?
My advice is, if you're a murderer/rapist, leave your iPhone at home when out murdering/raping. It's what I do :)

Sam Slater:
And I don't own it because it's "shiny" (it's not, it's in a black case), I own it because it's a phone, Internet, camera, email, dictaphone, calendar, eBay store, iPod, games console and a billion other things with all the free online porn I can watch and all for ?20 a month. Which is ?5 less than the shitty nokia-phone-only thing I had two years ago when I bought the iPhone.

3 reasons why Apple products are like Carol Vordermann.
They look good and they're intelligent.
Secretly everyone wants a go on one.
Erm, no viruses.
