How do software companies constantly get away with producing fucking shit crap cuntin' programs that crash, infect themselves throughout every file of your operating system, take over practically everything you want to do and require 49 fucking plug-ins (also full of bugs) before they're supposed to work?

I'll tell you how- it's because stupid fucking cuntin' moronic idiots like me keep paying for them, each time thinking "Oh, all the reviews say its great. This'll be OK".

I need a good slap.

Fuckin' bloody cuntin' fuckin' SHIT!

You've probably already guessed that I'm using a PC.

It's only 4 days old and the unit itself is brill (after all I choose the parts myself!). Very quick and most things work, but when reading from portable HDDs or trying to view some FLV files I run into endless requests for more drivers that wont install or plug-ins that don't fix anything.

One of these days I'll try Linux.

I know I will be savaged for this, but Lara got a lovely new Samsung netbook with Windows 7 and asked me to do some stuff on it like webcams and so on. All I can say is after working on Macs for the last few years, going back to a PC with Windows 7, was akin to working in a nursing home and trying to communicate with hapless souls suffering from dementia. Everything is SO DAMN SLOW! From boot up, which takes for ever, because in the msconfig bit Windows in their greed must open about 100 fucking useless applications regardless of whether you need them or not. Through to it's general use, there's always a problem somewhere, somehow. I could not believe a brand new machine could be so crap. Guess what, Lara's dumped it and dug out our old Vaio running Windows XP.

Your complaints don't surprise me at all. I think Windows 7 is a disaster and I think I might attempt to put XP on the netbook, which I think was quite stable in comparison.

I know Macs are very expensive and you have to pay for everything, but they really are seamless, elegant machines to operate, everything JUST WORKS! I await the !shitstorm! lol

If you think Windows 7 is bad, you should have tried Vista. I actually think Windows 7 is good, but I know nothing else...I started with Microsoft on their first versions of MSDOS.

Mr Slip - I haven't spent the time yet to learn all the new tricks to using 7 (I just want to get a few things done at this stage), but it seems that they've changed things around simply to make it look different. Underneath it's still the same old jumble of patched up 30 year old programs that are now 400 times bigger than they would be if they didn't have to work with all their other crappy software.

I don't know why they changed some perfectly fine features eg: I'm used to selecting files and clicking 'MOVE' to put things where I want. If you're repeatedly moving batches of files to a folder, this is a handy, logical way to do it. I did this a lot in XP but in 7 the drop-down menus or right-click options only allow me to either copy or cut. Why can't I just fucking move it the way I've done in all previous versions?

This has all the hallmarks of something thought up by a committee!

Firstly you can't blame the OS for rogue programmes. Blame the suppliers who put the crapware in because they're paid to, which keeps the price of your laptop lower. You don't get as much crapware with Macs but that's because Apple don't allow it, not because their OS is immune.

Secondly, you shouldn't have any issues at all reading from external HDDs. If they're usb or firewire then they should be plug&play. If it's an eSata connection it may need the relevant driver, but, again, this is not the fault of Windows 7 but a genuine hardware requirement. Blame the motherboard manufacturers for not standardising the stuff so one driver fits all.

Thirdly, FLV files are easy to view. I use WMPHC with ffdshow codec pack. A simpler option, if you don't want to mess around with codec packs is installing VLC player.

I'd recommend Linux. Since you're new to Linux and hate installing codecs I'd try Mint. You can try it without installing by running it from a live disk (installing to a cd-rom and booting up from there. If you like it then you can install alongside Windows 7 and have a choice at boot up. Most essential codecs and programmes are pre-installed with Mint.

XP is less secure than both Vista and Win7. Microsoft release more critical updates per month than Vista or Win7, even after 10 years.

Vista was a hog but Win7 is the best OS out there, overall. No question.

Read this report (it's a downloadable pdf) >

It's people not updating their browsers, programmes and OSs that help harbour hidden viruses and trojans. Unless you have some VITAL software you use on XP that you cannot get on Win7 then there's not a single reason why you shouldn't update.
