I've always thought the myth was unfair to Oedipus as he didn't know that Laius was his father when he killed him over a 'road rage' incident , nor that Jocasta was his mother when he later married her.

Wow... I never knew that.
I should actually read Greek tragedy instead of just quoting it.
I wonder why the meaning has stuck to the name when (if what you say is correct) the poor bugger was simply murderous and in love... but definitely NOT Patricidal and incestuous!
Because to be fair... one has to know what one is really doing to really be guilty of those specific accusations I think. I mean if you murder your father without knowing he's your father then it's murder but not murder of your father because that part is incidental to the crime rather than the motive...
