claiming Benefits, by those who dont care...

I was speaking to someone recently who has been on Benefit for 7 years, and presumably gets a lot of money given to him. His rent is paid in central London, he gets various Benefits to live on, and he never ever considers going back to work. He is a big fan of football and plays in several London leagues and that takes up a lot of his days. He also gets stoned a lot. He loves getting up at midday and dossing around in the park in the afternoons. He was saying that in the summer he goes wind-surfing on the River Thames (aparently you can do this, but it is the first I had heard of it).

I said to him a few weeks ago: "do you think you will ever work again?". He, like many people on Incapacity Benefit, 'has bipolar' (it is the modern thing to have apparently - many celebrities 'have bipolar'). He replied: "I dont think so, I enjoy dossing around too much, playing footie, getting stoned, having what is basically a long holiday, and sleeping late each day.' I was quite shocked. Work has never crossed his mind, his last job, 7 years ago, was in a large hardware store, and lasted 2 months.

This guy couldn't care less. He will just party for the next 50 years at phenominal expense to the taxpayer. He enjoys the long holiday he is on, enjoys smoking lots of weed, and enjoys kicking a ball around. How is it some people have a conscience, when others dont give a shit? Why is it that it never crosses the minds of these people that others have to get up each day, and work hard to earn their money for them? Why dont they consider these things?

What are people's theories as to why people get like this? Is it poor education that makes some people uncaring, or do you think some people are just born like that? And what can be done to stop those who fleece the Welfare State, forever, and dont care about it, from doing so?

Funny you should say that.

About 15 years ago I took a caravan holiday with my family.

In the caravan next to us was a man who had been made redundant and bought this caravan.

He spent every summer there, sea fishing, lazing around, chilling out.

I said to my wife how awful that must be.

At the end of the week we left the site and I went back to work.

We left the guy there, doing his fishing, sunbathing, chilling out.

And as I went back to work I wonderded who was the stupid one !

>or do you think some people are just born like that?

Some people have a conciense, others do not.

In the same way some people court danger and others avoid it.

I have always been scared of heights, or going too fast in cars, in fact danger in general. I do almost everything I can to avoid putting myself in a dangerous situation.

Others LOVE danger and go rock climbing or bungee jumping or race on motor bikes or in cars.

These are two extremes of how you face danger.

In the same way some people have a conciense and hate living on benefits, others will claim all they can and not give a shit.

Not much you can do about it (except report him) and as has been said, this country has now "lost control" of its benefits system and there are millions on the "take" like this guy.

All part of the long term downfall of this country.

I have often thought that my priorities are wrong.
to keep in employment, pay my bils, car insurance tax etc etc etc...

I seem to be doing it wrong!!

But I woudlnt have the bottle to try it the dossers way,I would be the one who gets caught and the one the judge wants to make an example of and get a long sentance.
But some dont seem to give a shit.

Max, have you seen the bit in Jackie Brown where Robert de Niro's character says to Bridget Fonda's character 'You shouldn't smoke that stuff all the time. It'll rob you of your ambition!' And she says 'What if your ambition is to sit around smoking dope?'

It is a point of view.

There's no great dignity or moral superiority in being treated like a twat by idiots which is a common experience in the world of work. Millions of people play the lottery every weekend in the hope of gaining the means to opt out of it .. that's how great it is !

Who wouldn't enjoy that? You can keep the weed but partying and footy playing seems a magnificent lifestyle!

Ah, well, there's the rub, Max. We're all different. I couldn't look at myself in the mirror giving myself ?50,000,000 a year in bonuses while there are homeless kids on the street but many bankers don't think twice about it; some even think it's deserved!!!!!!

I don't think it's anything to do with education. Highly educated people often need more stimulation and encouragement than the less knowledgeable. Some might say it's better to keep people thick and ignorant for them to 'get with the programme'.

Sorry to go off topic but noticed this at the bottom of Sam Slaters append.

>"Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice."
>Thomas Paine

Statue of Thomas Paine in Telford

Richard Attenborough always said he wanted to make a film about Thomas Paine but nobody would ever fund it.

An Englishman heavily involved in both the American Civil War AND the French Revolution.
