I'm off to Russia very shortly. I was in St Petersburg a few months ago and I was quite taken with the place. Their Metro is very efficient, the streets were clean and I found the people to be quite friendly. The food was good and pretty cheap although I didn't think much of their beer. It was reasonably warm the last time I was there but as I'm due out there before the end of the month, I'm expecting it to be a good bit cooler this time. At least it will give me an excuse to try a glass of their vodka.

Buildings and monuments are not really my thing but I did go on a tour and what I saw certainly outclassed London,Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

Hi

I love Venice. Been twice. Once for the Carnival in February and once in May. The smile hardly ever left my face. Places like Florence are famous for their galleries and museums but with Venice the entire city is a work of art. The complete absence of roads makes it incredibly special. Travelling down the Grand Canal in a vaporetto (water bus) on a sunny day. Ace!

The only think I would warn against is that it is the most expensive place in Italy to visit, completely different prices apply. Everyone should go to Venice, but preferably not when I'm there!!!

As for the Himalayas, I've been a couple of times for 3 month visits. Nepal has everything from sub-tropical jungle with rhinos and tigers through to the top of Everest and all in a country that is not that much bigger than Britain. I trekked round Annapurna, climbed a 6000 metre peak, went to Everest Base Camp and visited the Terai park which has the rhinos and elephants etc. Amazing country with very friendly people particularly the Sherpas in the Hill country. Joanna Lumley is right - these are fine people.

Cheers
D
