Beginner's problem with P2Pfilesharing

Hello,
trying to keep it short and to use not too bad English:
Using BitTorrent I've managed to download at least one video file correctly.
I.e. I have got the video and can watch it.
With the other "downloads" I have had only problems.
Several files cannot be opened unless I get a special Software for it, which must be bought.
Others tell me something like: this file cannot be opened.
Others ask me if I want to download "trackers". (?)
An one VERY BIG file which took me many hours to download consist of several seperate files, some of which cannot be opened, others of which contain something completely different from what they should contain by their names. (For example, the name is a certain XXX-Video, but the contents is just audio music)
What are your experience with P2P filesharing, and what can I do to avoid mistakes and to get video files that can be opended and watched?
Thanks in advance for helpful answers!
Regards
