I watched that documentary film about Metallica on More4 a couple of nights ago and was blown away by how loaded these guys are. It was also worth noting how ordinary they are aswell. Added on to their studio is a room where they sit and eat during recording breaks and where they have meetings too. This room looked no differnt to a porta-kabin where AA or RAC breakdown repair men would go on their breaks - average table, cooker, fridge, etc. Having auditioned various people in their quest to find a new bass player, they congregated in the room at the table. Lars Ulrich, the drummer, said to the guy they had chosen "we would like to give you ?1 million to join our band". He obviously agreed! James Hetfield, the frontman, then described to him the percentage he would get.

With this new album they were recording, Lars Ulrich decided he wanted to restart his life and put behind him many things he had had in his life for the last 10 years. We see Lars' mansion (probably one of several) and he decided to sell all his paintings. These were huge - like 15 foot by 20 foot in size, and he had bought them all over the last 10 years. They are transported to an auction house in New York and Lars watches as they sell for an average of $5 million each! And he is just the drummer! Imagine the wealth of James Hetfield and the lead guitar player, who are repsonsible for a lot of the song writing duties - and of course the song writers get the biggest chunk of the cash! This is one of the world wealthiest bands, and one of the most normal aswell. Always keen to chat to fans and seem genuinely touched when meeting a fan and the fan says something nice to them.

Rock'n'roll.......

Yes and no, if comes down to your individiual opinion of downloading music...lars believed people should pay for something if they want it so saying the mechanic thing is logical in that sense. I'm not sure they are as anti it nowadays having seen the progress the internet has made towards a lot of music

Metallica were the biggest grossing concert act of the 90's regularly making over a $1 million a concert, selling 100 million albums in there career and have just been invited to be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. Being quite a big fan myself that documentary is 4 or 5 years old and Lars Ulrich has recently just sold some more art making again a lot of money, they are certainly one of the richest bands around certainly rivalling U2, and all people do is keep bringing up the battle with Napster just drop it people its old news get over it.

Lars has a varied CV to say the least! Champion tennis player, then drummer in one of the biggest heavy rock bands on earth. Metallica certainly earned it though, touring very hard in the early days to make their name, just like U2 did.

Grossing $1million a show was not that much back in the 1990's though. To sell out an 80,000 capacity stadium you would gross a million a night if you sold the tickets for just $12.50 each. They sold for more like $40 each back in the 1990's and would likely be $100 and more for a big gig today.

erm, I have dropped it, I was just iterating why he is perceived as a "complete tosser" by a lot of people as posted above, and the reason why he would expect free car servicing if someone downloads his music.
