..can anyone reccomend a decent cheapish (?30-40) inkjet printer and cheap ink cartridge retailer...i've had enough of my HP deskjet (it's useless) and what with the spiralling cost of ink -am looking for a bargain..

epson or canon all the way....generally affordable printers, and cheaper ink....especially if you plan ahead and order online

Inkjet ink has always been very expensive. The printer manufacturers use the razor blade model - cheap handle, expensive blades.

It is usually cheaper to buy a new printer than to get a set of cartridges for an old one

I went to a seminar on the ink presented by HP a couple of years ago and they explained some of the issues around the ink - for example, the ink has to be liquid enough to flow through the tiny nozzles in the print head and not dry up too quickly in the cartridge, but also has to dry on the paper relatively fast.

If you want cheap printing and don't need photo quality, go for a laser printer as the cost per page is much lower. You do need to print a lot for the benefits to be realised.

If you don't need colour printing I've seen laser printers in Office World for 44 quid. The cartridges last much longer than Ink ones and I've just refilled the toner in my Samsung cartridge for under 9 quid and it should last at least 3000 pages.

When a local business closed down they sold all the office equipment - I bought 6 HP C15A Laser Toner Cartridges for ?10, retail price is over ?50 each. I thought I'd be able to buy a printer that uses them - but unfortunately they don't make them anymore. So what seemed like a bargain turned out to be 6 cartridges I can't use. Suppose someone would buy them off me if I were on ebay, but I can't be bothered with that.

Have a look on ebay, then have a look at UKDVDR on compatible inks, and work out which Epson or Canon will meet your needs.
