Help! I am having difficulty downloading any scenes to PC! I use Sony Vegas 6 and capture from Sony HV-A1E Camcorders(sometimes Canon XM1). I am using OHCI etc compliant firewire card and usually the "vidcap60.exe"which Vegas loads up seems to work fine to download from DV in the camcorder straight to hard drive. Using Windows XP(SP2 I think)

Until recently plugging in the Camcorder produced a message like "Sony HVR-A1E detected" - fired up the Vegas capture programme and downloaded

Now neither camera is recognised - I seemed to manage for a while by "system restoring" to an earlier time when they were - but even that no longer seems to work.

Tried detecting in Windows Moviemaker and Nero 7 - but similar nil result.

Seemingly something is now "missing" from the PC - I can only surmise that the firewire card has failed - anyone suffered similar and/or have any ideas

OK completly out of my depth here....but gonna ask one very very obvious question. Are you sure that the USB cable you are connecting the Camcorder too the PC with aint on the blink?

It may sound silly but could be worth checking the cable with another piece of harware. Just to rule it out.

There was an XP update recently that did the same sort of thing for me but took out the soundcard afterwards - just wasn't recognised as being there.

I did the old add new hardware route to get it working again. It might be as simple as doing that?

You are correct, the driver that detects a fire wire device present doesn't seem to be functioning. This kind of thing used to happen all the time, and many times I had to turn on the peripherals and reboot the computer and then the PC would suddenly see the device. Try it on another computer with fire wire and see what happens.

God only knows, how they landed on the Moon using a Commodore 64 as their computer!

Simple answer - get a Mac.

BTW, The Apollo Guidance Computer had 1/16th of the RAM of a Commodore 64

Does either of your cameras show up in the device manager when connected?

It might also be worth downloading this patch and see if it helps.
