Laptop Problem

Folks

Does anyone know what could be wrong with a laptop that has power but won't come on please?

I don't know much about it a friend has asked me and as usual with all things technical I haven't got a clue.

I was thinking system restore could work but produced a blank.

If its knackered what's causing it to be knackered if its not knackered how can it be fixed (easily if possible please) ?

Cheers

Andy

Seeing as you've tried system restore i'm guessing that it has powered up. What exactly isn't working?

Hi Welshfella.

I haven't tried system restore just suggested it.

Apparently it's not not registering which I am assuming means its on but the screen is completely blank.

The laptop is a Dell d6 10 ?

Bare with me she's down South and I am up North so can't physically see the problem.

Any ideas appreciated.

Cheers

Andy

If you can try and get some more specific details, such as what EXACTLY happens when its turned on, and what operating system its running plus the make of laptop, then I will do my best to help...

However at the moment there simply isn't enough detail to be able too :)

Ok, you've not got the laptop with you so ask her:

When you plug it in via the mains are any light indicators on (power/charging etc)?

Can she here the hard drive start up, and the fans whirring?

If yes to above questions, then you know it's getting power through to the motherboard, hard disks, cpu and ram.

Does she get the bios splash screen before windows loads, or is the screen just black?

If the screen is black and she's hearing the windows boot up jingle, it's the screen. If the screen's black and she here's no jingle it's the video card.

If she gets the bios splash screen ok but the screen goes black as windows loads up, it's a driver issue which means she'll have to uninstall that driver by booting up in safe mode.

Sorry, that's about all I can give but it should help to narrow down the problem.

P.s. Please make sure she checks that she hasn't turned the brightness all the way down before anything else......you'd be surprised.

Cheers Sam

She's tried getting into it via safe mode but no joy.

It's late now so will get hold of her tomorrow.

Thanks again

Andy
