Video editing software - good but cheap?

Hi
I use Sonic for committing files to DVD's to watch away from the PC.
I would like to edit files, stitch files together - and possibly, funds committing, and if it's not too technical, have the facility to zoom while editing.
By the latter, I mean edit out *part* of the picture during the compiling process, as opposed to zooming in later.
For instance, if I'm watching a girl doing her bit, I don't always want to watch a guy wanking to her left!
Any ideas and help much appreciated

very good
...
I don't even have the facility to 'slit' the scene at present though.
The zooming thing is not compulsory, but good software to edit and join clips together is.
Sonic do their own which is probably fine, but if somebody does something cheaper and better then I'd rather have that.
I'm sure some people on here use such software from time to time

If you are running XP then you will have Movie Maker installed, import your selected files and you can split the scenes and save the bits you want to the film you wish to keep.
