Scroungers Screwed?

I was cheered to see Tony and Gordon for once united in a worthy cause - putting the boot in ner-do-wells, wasters, and scroungers. Of course it's more of a finger wagging than a kicking, but at least it's a start. Why should the rest of us subsidies these losers and their benefit funded lives? Why don't they have any shame or self-respect? Who's responsible? Our grandparents would have rather died than accept charity or handouts. Most folks were proud, principled, and self-reliant back then. How times have changed.

I agree Officer but I have to also look at the realistic side that some people are aimless with their lives and dont know what to do with themselves. Strange as this is for me to understand I also recognise that too much time on ones hands usually results in mischief and depression and when someone is depressed it is very hard to motivate them into things like a job and a career because that means swapiing their dull dreary non existent lives for a similar one with a 9 to 5.
I know how it looks like I'm making excuses for them but the solution is not a simple one. I guess someone should light a fire under their arses is one impractical suggestion.
Plus I blame a lot of things today on selfish parents who have no interest in motivating their kids interests from when they are young.

Agreed. Lazy parents too. PC's, XBox 360's, Playstation 3's, Wii's, 157 children's TV channels. All just to keep the kids occupied so mum & dad can have a quiet life.

Strange that el Phonio has been in power for ten years, yet suddenly decides to reform the welfare state in his last few months in office. As if. Nu Labor are bullshit merchants from start to finish. Remember "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime"? This is just more toss from the master of the meaningless soundbite.

Well there are elections coming up in May, not that I'm cynical or anything, but he does need a few vote winners....

I have to agree with OEJ and it is not that simple. I spent a period of unemployment because of redundancy. It is so easy to feel sorry for oneself and falling into depression after being rejected for one job after another. Even when I was doing a Degree I was applying for jobs and I couldn't even get a position in Tesco as an assistant or part-time as a home delivery driver for Iceland. After a while you just feel useless because you end up thinking if I can't even get those poxy jobs, then what am I good for?
A couple of years down the line and I have now got my perfect job. I'm now teaching ICT to kids who have left school with very qualifications (if any) and can't sign on because of their age. The problem with many of them is that they are second or third generation jobless, so they have never seen or known the ethics of work.
The other 'problem' is that some people cannot afford to work as their total amount of benefits is just about the same, if not better, than what their wage would be. I don't like this and I didn't like when I was unemployed but at the end of the day, we humans are selfish, and we work for ourselves or families not because we feel guilty about the guy living down the road because he is paying taxes from his salary. He pays them regardless. I know I will probably get slated for that but it's a sad fact.
Thank you all for taking the time to read.
