It will happen in one of three ways:
1. An Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, leading to Iranian retaliation against US forces
2. A US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, with a similar response
3. A determined US show of military force to add to the diplomatic pressures on Iran that "goes wrong".
Personally I favour option 3. You can't have this kind of military build up without tense relations and then just one innocuous incident can have the 'butterfly effect' and turn a crisis into conflict. And if that happens then British troops will be sucked into conflict whether Blair wants to or not.

Iran's arsenal of Sunburn Ship destroying cruise missiles will give the US Navy
a bloody nose....2 or 3 thousand US sailors screaming for their Mothers before
being burnt alive then sent to the bottom of the Gulf will give them something
to ponder, underestimate the Persians at their peril.

More likely is that the phoney war will continue for the next year, allowing GWB to start the real thing in time to screw things up for whoever takes over after him. It would give him a deal of satisfaction to drop Clinton, Obama or whoever into a war of his making.

You sound almost gleeful at the prospect, Mark.
But surely your vitriol would be better directed not at the 17 to 20-something young lads on the ships, but at the politicians on both sides who let's face it are as bad as each other in their own ways. Like a bunch of fucking overgrown schoolboys the lot of 'em, the way they goad each other on and keep upping the ante.
In any case though, the US Navy is capable of delivering its own payload from well beyond the range of the Iranian Silkworms.
But let's hope that cooler heads will prevail and it doesn't come to that.

"It looks as though invasion of Iran is pretty much on the cards this spring."
I doubt very much that there will be "an invasion". Most of the US forces are tied up elsewhere and Iran is a serious country. An invasion would be a massive undertaking. I don't believe that even the US has the resources to mount such an invasion. And, given the current political climate of anti-Americanism, the suggestion is simply ridiculous.
"In my humble view the combined Iraq/Iran business will be easily on a par with anything perpetrated by Hitler."
Now you really are being ridiculous, and veering into the realms of hysterical sloganeering.
The current military build up is most likely just saber rattling. But another possibility is that military action IS on the cards - this would most likely be the bombing of Iran's uranium/plutonium enrichment facilities, by either Israel or the US itself, and the build up of forces would be to slap the Iranians back down should they lash out at Israel or Iraq in the wake of the bombing.
The Israelis have vowed never to let the wild-eyed Iranians get 'the bomb'. Since they might well set it off in the region, killing hundreds of thousands, and justifying their actions as it being 'the will of Allah'. The Israelis have made it clear to Washington that if they don't do the job of neutralizing the Iranian bomb, then they will.
Talk of war in the region is credible. Talk of WW3 is idiotic, hysterical, nonsense. The Iranians do not have a global reach (except for the odd terrorist cell), so talk of WW3 is not credible - unless you think the Chinese or Russians might actively take sides with Iran, and that's not very credible either.
Keith, do you have an anti-western agenda? Would you feel more comfortable in Tehran (maybe you could open a sex shop there? Or an off license?), since you always seem to be talking the Islamists up and doing your own side down. Could it be that you are just being pretentious and perverse, in the manner of a good many middleclass people? Are you just being a silly Billy, rebelling against your privileged middleclass upbringing and university education? If so, maybe one day you will come to your senses and realize just which side your bread is buttered on.
For all it's faults I'll take the western lifestyle and world view over any irrational, mediaeval, third world one. Yes, of course we should treat them with fairness and justice, but if we value our western lifestyle above all others, we have to do whatever it takes to stop the fuckers dragging us back into a dark age.

yeah, your right, It did come across a bit gleeful, that wasn't what I intended, more a heat-of-the-moment red mist kind of thing.
it is the politicians, using young willing canon fodder for their own despicable agendas that enrages me....enough of this, back to wanking......
