Roman Catholics getting their knickers in a twist

Delighted that the the govt appears to be ignoring the pleadings of the rc church that their part publicly funded agencies should not have to comply with proposed new anti discrimination practice and that the agencies either comply or lose their money. The Pope is against gays being allowed to adopt ...they are sinners after all

Agree... the government's been pandering more and more to religion. It's good seeing common sense prevail for once.

Funny how the crazy bunch haven't been foaming at the mouth and calling for a clamp-down on Catholics. Imagine if it had been Muslims complaining!

Saw a guy walking down one of the main street in Wellington today wearing a Tshirt with a pic of the BVM and underneath "Of course it was a virgin birth if anal doesn't count."

Im not religious and im definitely not a Roman Cathoilic, but in my opinion homosexuals should not be allowed to adopt.

I know this is not PC and i will be called a bigot but i just think something as serious as adopting a child should be left to a normal family, ie mother and father.

In my opinion when two homosexuals become partners they automatically give up the right to having children, not by law but by nature.

I have an open mind and listen to other opinions, but im yet to see a good argument for homosexuals adopting.

It is unacceptable that people are able to discriminate using the argument that it is their religious belief. I used to work with someone who held the most extreme views about gays, women, etc but got away with it because he claimed it was his religious conviction. Nevertheless I do feel the question of gay people adopting is a different matter. In the natural order of things parents are obviously male and female and it does not seem to be unreasonable that adopting parents should be one of each sex, in order that the child is brought up a home as similar to what is the norm as possible. With this single exception, gay people should be allowed to live their lives protected by law against discrimination and bigotry.

I have to agree.

Even friends I have who are gay are mostly against this. They say that 90% of gay men couldn't care less about adopting, or children, and most gays are just trying to push the boundaries..........they have a point I guess.

In general though, gay relationships are more polygamous than even today's divorce-easy society. We have to think of the children, and their welfare. Not that I think some gays wouldn't be good, responsible parents (they'd probably be better parents than a lot of straight couples) but I'm talking of mental welfare. How do you explain to a 5 year old why he/she has 2 daddies instead of one? Why they don't have a mummy? Errrr, where do babies come from dad?

Then there's the age where the kids are beginning to understand 'who' their dads are, and their sexual inclinations. There's the teasing at school too.

All in all, there shouldn't be anything legally that should stop gays from adopting. My question to the gay couples who try is: 'Are you thinking fully of the child's welfare, or is this a passing fad?' 'Is this about what you want or what you want the child to have?'

As for the church, they should be liable to British law, and if they don't like it, tough. They shouldn't get special privileges.

Well said, David.

The worrying aspect is that Teflon Tone, who has done more than his share of flirting with Cherie's faith, is looking to broker a deal. Since his smugness will convert to Catholicism once his tenure as PM is up, I wonder what solution he'll come up with.

I wish people would cite their own ethical beliefs for their decisions, rather than hiding behind some religious creed.
