If your style requires such precise window sizing to work, you need to change your style! Users set their browsers to the window size they are comfortable with. This is just bad web-design.

I don't get why they do it tbh.

Is there any way of stopping websites having this control over my browser?

I hate the opposite. I don't want a new window open at all if not maximised.

Here's a worse one - just visited a site. Absolutely no content shown. Checked the html and it seems that if I use Firefox with Adblock enabled than I don't get to see any content. If I want to see content I have to view all the Google ads and other nice flashing banners or use.....shudder....IE

I have often wondered what active x was?

As you say you do get warned about it, which then get's you thinking... however I end up clicking to allow it.

Does it mean that it is possibly a way to get/catch spyware, trojan or virus?

What would happen if you didn't allow active x ?

Active-X is a way of controling elements on a web page (similar to a java applet) however they have full access to Windows and so can be problematic with regard to viruses (virii?) and trojans, which is why you get asked if you wnat to run them or not. If you don't run them - nowt happens but the webpage you are on might just not work the way you require.

Thanks Jacques

Bit like the web designer showing off then..... be safer if they designed them not to use/need the feature. I have always accepted/allowed. Next time I see the warning I won't and see what happens.
Or better still MicroSoft somehow do a safety check as it provides the warning.
