The same bone that he broke during Euro 2004, which effectively meant the end of England's challenge. And the same bone that Beckham broke in the run-up to the 2002 World Cup. True, the Spice Boy recovered in time to play in that tournament, but his winning penalty against Argentina aside, he did fuck-all else of note because he simply wasn't match-fit as a result of the injury.

And with Michael Owen still not match-fit this time round after recovering from his own broken metatarsal, we'll be looking to the likes of Crouch, Defoe and Bent for goals up front - which doesn't exactly fill One with confidence does it?!

England will probably muddle through their Group, but it'll be "taxi to the airport" after the next round, methinx!

I must confess that I thought the same as you as statistically when one of the major football nations plays at home in the world cup then they do go far into the tournament but I'm not sure that will happen this time with the germans.

However I have a very good friend who's german and he reckons they have no chance and keeps telling me that this is the worst german side for 50 years with a coach who hasn't a clue.

We'll see if he's right.

That means nothing. I live in Germany and that's EXACTLY what our Teutonic cousins were saying before the last World Cup. But despite being a decidedly average side playing boring football, the easiest of draws (which pitted them against against Saudi Arabia, Cameroon and the Republic of Ireland in the group stages, followed by Paraguay, the USA and South Korea in the knockout stages) meant that they didn't have to play any teams of note along the way, and thus made it to the final.

And given home advantage this time round, I can definitely see Germany doing their usual trick of being very medicore but STILL muddling their way though to the final - most likely in the way they usually do it, namely via a combination of penalty shootouts and edgy 1-0 victories over teams they should (on paper) be beating comfortably.

Then they'll probably somehow manage to scrape past Brazil 1-0 in the final.

Remember that with the exception of the 1978 final, EVERY post-war World Cup Final has featured either (West) Germany or Brazil - and last time they both got there. So it's odds-on it'll be a repeat this time round, except that Germany will scrape a win on home turf.

If England come up against Germany in the knockout stages, we'll slaughter them 1-1 (most likely with Sol Campbell contributing his usual disallowed goal late on) and then - as usual - lose on penalties.

That's my prediction - but I'd be more than happy to be proved wrong.

I have to disagree and side with my mate. They have always (as you say) muddled there way through tournaments and got to the latter stages but not this time.

They haven't got anywhere near enough quality and they have a coach that couldn't tell his ass from his proverbial elbow.

Remember alot of the Germans previous success was down to their superior organisation and preparation but many other countries have caught them up in that regard and even overtaken them and thus negated that advantage.

They'll get out of the group but won't go much further (if any) than that. But then what do I know as I gave up betting because I was a poor tipster.
