Why the bloody hell call it 9 years when it's 4. Is it because if it was reported as 4 years then it sounds far too lenient, I expect so.

Life sentance isn't life, 9 years isn't 9 years, Probation isn't anything.... Our legal penalty is a joke.

These bastards deserve too be hanged nothing more nothing less! I have 2 girls myself 1 of 18 and the other of 14. I would spend the rest of my life hunting these monsters down and torturing them on a hourly basis until I was satisfied beyond belief, I would want them to die in my present with a pain so unbearable I would gratefully accept their passage to hell just too get away from me!

I think you will see more "lesser" sentences in the future. The big problem is the lack of prison space.

As we as a nation have no plans to build any more........sentences have got to get less and allow the law to concentrate on the motorist !!!

I don't know too much about this case but the basic argument you are putting forward is sensible and reasonable. Clearly if someone is sentenced to 9 years they should serve a period which bears some resemblance to that. I accept that in order to preserve order in prison some discount on the sentence is essential but not 5 years off a 9 year sentence! Equally I accept that judges have to give a discount for pleas of guilty but, recently, some of these seem excessive.

Hi Just new on here today.Cant believe that these sentences are so low.Why dont they use some of these prisoners for experiments instead of animals?.I have a daughter and I would not settle till the criminal was screaming in front of my very eyes with pain that he could not imagine.

Cut his BOLLOCKS off ! Extreme I know but it will stop him and put others off !

Anybody sentenced to over 4 years has to do AT LEAST two thirds of that time in jail. Depending on his behaviour inside, compliance with sentence plan targets etc,he may well do the full 9.

I'm not for one minute saying that it's enough, and prison is far too easy and biased towards treating the scum with 'decency', but newspaper reports like this one make a bad situation worse with their lack of facts

Trust me here as I know from my own experience that most people inside laugh at Judges, Courts and the law and can't believe the lightness of their sentences, particularly repeat and persistent offenders.

All they do is enrol is some scheme and plead they are trying to turn their lives around when the reality is they are just conning the system with more than a little snigger. Obviously a few do try but the majority don't. It's just an excuse.

The only way forward is stiffer sentences but as someone else said unless they build at least half a dozen new prisons pronto then that aint gonna happen.

We have more prisoners than ever before in our history, and the highest prison population in Europe already. Sentencing is getting heavier, not lighter.

Legalise drugs, reduce sentences for non-violent offenders, and we'll have all the space we need to lock up the rapists, murderers and assorted head cases.

Locking everyone up doesn't reduce crime: look at America for proof.

Prison ships, leaky prison ships for the special ones, and I would even include Wearside Jack as a special one.

We are going soft on sentencing... yet pensioners are being locked up for council tax arrears........
