Tiscali Broadband slow speed

Has any other Tiscali users experienced very very slow speeds between 5pm-Midnight recently?. This looks to me like contention but Tiscali say I have a problem at the BT exchange. Funny how the exchange problem fixes itself at certain times ie 1meg speed at 1 am, and then the BT exchange going wrong!!! at 8pm with a speed of just 53K.
I have had this for nearly two weeks. Tiscali keep acknowledging that I have a problem and they have credited me twice with ?10 each time and suspended the monthly charge till fixed.

I shall try to post this now, however at this time it normally just freezes up. I try again and get thru only to find I posted twice so sorry if that happens.

Any advice/experience

Thanks

PC

Yeah PC, I get it too- after 5pm, with everyone returning from work, the server is overworked, too many people competing for bandwidth! I don't understand their 'BT exchange' argument; sounds like a fobb-off.

A pain in the arse, but it's generally not too bad for me......

At one point it was soooo slow, I thought my computer had been contaminated with some rogue virus.

Generally, though, I'm disappointed broadband is not as quick as is advertised- 1Mb per second? Who's kidding who here?

!confused!

I used Tiscali for POP3 e-mail and I had so many timeouts its untrue hence switching to gmail (thanks to Cenobitez for the invite by the way), they said I lived to far from the exchange and that was causing my problems and yet my Demon ADSL is consistantly excellent. Go figure!!!!

I used to have AOL Broadband, after 3 years of AOL narrowband use, they where the first company to offer me a flat fee. Recently however I changed to NTL and with it bypassing any BT exchange problems its really fast and reliable. One guy from AOL told me that anything going through a BT exchange will be slower and at peak times their systems have problems coping, my advice is to get a broaband cable supplier like NTL and avoid that problem altogether.

My Niece has AOL broadband and like you they have problems at peak times my NTL is active and free from botttlenecks NTL may not be in ever area but try to find a cable supplier.

thats 1 MEGABIT NOT BYTE, theres 8bits to a byte so 1024 / 8 = 128KB so its an EIGHTH of a megabyte per second, so your looking at 7 MegaBytes per minute.

so 53Kb per second is about 512kb broadband.

Not too many happy bunnies here.-

Wish I had found this site before signing up for a whole year argh!!!!

At least I am not alone, some people have exactly the same problem and tech support response (or lack of).

I have written to them, and if I don't hear from them by Wednesday then I will attach the letter to an email to the MD.

So I don't recommend Tiscali....

Regarding Cable - That would be my prefered choice, it seems technically to be the correct transport for Broadband.

However About 5 years ago they were digging at the bottom of the garden alongside the road, Then we got a letter thru saying it was a cable service from Crawley to Tunbridge Wells and would be coming to our town soon.
But it has never come - so near yet so far.......

Porn Cracker, telephone the cable companies and ask them about cable in your area, I called the last year and my street was not cable connected and they told me if you can get enough people to sign up to broadband in the street they will connect. In some cases there are areas that they will not cable for some reasons, best bet ask them you knever know.

One thing that really annoys me about BT is their exchanges, they are only just now upgrading them, after BT dragging their feet and not allowing other companies for years to get most of the UK connected because of BT's dominance in the market, the fact that they were allowed to dominate the market throughout the 70s and 80s unchecked, making if I remember correctly quartely 2.5 billion profit. And none of this Money was used to upgrade any of their network.

Only now because of competition are they being forced to shift their asses and make the changes, but as you see there are still many problems with the BT exchanges, so I will never go back to using them. Cable is so well set up and fast no messy little wires and connectors that cause all kinds of problems.

Hope you get it sorted. Al.
