Very subjective question, but a good one. I'll have a go at naming a few of mine, in no particular order. A lot of my choices are not that original! Right then:

Beach Boys- Pet Sounds ('66/67)
The Clash- London Calling ('79)
David Bowie- Low ('76)
Fleetwood Mac- Rumours ('77)
Beatles- White Album ('68?)
U2- The Joshua Tree ('87)

That was a piss-poor attempt, so many names of albums i cant remember. I thought there were a few corkers from the 90s......oh well.

Who is going to be the first to nominate the Dirty Dancing soundtrack?

As you asked for just one and, I assume, you don't include Classical:

Robin Trower - Bridge Of Sighs

For what it is worth, a couple of comments on best albums.

A great ALBUM is not just a collection of great songs, to me an album
must have a cohesive 'whole', all the songs should have been recorded
at the same time, and it should be better than the sum of the individual
songs.

This is what makes Dark Side of the Moon such a great album, it just WORKS.

My favorite is from 1967, "Forever Changes" by Love. In fact the lead
guy from the group, Arthur Lee, has started touring playing the album
live in a similar way to which Brian Wilson is touring with his band.

I think that any 'greatest hits' does not qualify for best album as it
is purely a collection of songs put together for marketing reasons.

Personally I think the Beatles White album is a flawed album, great
songs, yes, but too many duds, and you could just see the cracks
appearing in the group. George Martin said it should have been a
single album and he was probably right.

'Pet Sounds' is a collection of great songs, which Brian Wilson did a
wonderful job producing, but I think it is a couple of songs short of
being a great album, maybe if Good Vibrations has been ready, and
included, it would have been a great album.

The label put Brian under pressure to get it out and I think he would
have liked to include a few extra songs. Also "Sloop John B" is totally
out of context with the rest of the album.

Difference between Parlophone, who always gave the Beatles time to
get their albums just right, and Capitol, who were just after the quick
buck.

you have a cool taste in music

Glad to see Low on your list.
Surely the best album ever by the best artist ever!
Ah....Bowie's Berlin phase......fucking tremendous!!
Low only just edges out Heroes for me.
But then there's Hunky Dory and Diamond Dogs. Ziggy and The Man Who Sold The World.
Man, I could harp on about Bowie for hours.

Let us not forget such masterpieces as;

Harvest - Neil Young
Master Of Puppets - Metallica
Songs In The Key Of Life - Stevie Wonder
Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan

and last but certainly not least......

Smell The Glove - Spinal Tap

(The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin')

Thanks, big man.

Bowie is the don, Low is outstanding- Brian Eno's golden touch? Ziggy is a close second, then after that there are too many diamonds to sift through and place in order! Hunky Dory, Heroes, the dark apocalyptic Diamond Dogs...... time to dig out the vinyl! And don't forget a Mr. A. Sane!

There we were, T in the park last year, Bowie ends up quadrospazzed in hospital. Who do we get? The Darkness. I went off to desecrate a church. ;)
