Where's the ban on smoking in public places - we're always the first country to clamp down on anything that causes no harm, but last to tackle the real problems. Anyone starting to smoke today with all the facts we know deserves cancer to be honest. Cigarettes should not be available in corner shops, supermarkets or anywhere children go.

True they know the risks but choose to ignore it,the seriously ADDICTED do tend to be a bit that way

Lets not kid ourselves that smoking is the only thing out there thats legal and kills over time.

Leading a sedentary lifestyle can have the same effect as smoking on your cardiovascular system.Add in eating tasty food high in saturated fats with no nutritonal value and you might as well be a smoker

In the end the only thing bad about smoking is passive smoking IMHO

cheers

I am a smoker and I am all for banning it in pubs and restaurants, I had a holiday to Oz and New Zealand where this ban is already in effect (restaurants only in Oz) and I can honestly say it didn't bother me at all to go and have a smoke outside away from everyone else

See we are not all selfish twats just coz we smoke !

Our government make so much money from the duty on cigarettes and tabacco that they don't want to put bans on it as they fear a drop in revenue.

Much the same as they tell people to use public transport and get off the clogged up roads. However they don't do anything to improve the quality or lower the price of trains and buses because they want you to use your car so they can get road tax and duty in fuel off you.

I suspect smoking bans in all public places will only come in if the EU says so.

The Scottish Executive is enforcing a public ban from January. Curiously, the licensed trade people are suddenly born-again libertarians, calling for a campaign to defend the rights of smokers. Didn't hear much of them when non-smokers complained about the atmosphere in pubs except for "If you don't like it, you don't have to come in." Apparently the right to blow your filthy smoke so that 20 other people can "enjoy" it is more important than the right to enjoy smoke-free air.

If people want to smoke, fine---but just make sure it's for them and them alone. If they want to smell like an old ashtray, thats their concern. I just don't see why I should smell the same thanks to their addiction.

Many years ago, in 2000AD comic, the Judge Dredd strip feature a place called a smokertorium, where people had to go for a fag, and wear a body suit (rather like the decontamination suits firemen wear over their uniform) so that the whole body and the fag were enclosed and only the addict c ould breath his filth.

Something like that could be a good idea today.
We have need of you again, great king.
