You can have a read thru forums at http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/
There are some good offers for people to migrate between isp's - but you want one offering free activation and modem. I'd stick with one of the tradituional isp's rather than go with Tesco or whoever.
Pipex, Nildram and PlusNet all offer very good reliable services with very little downtime. Also it depends on whether you want unlimited d/l or want to pay less for a caped service. If you want to stream music or video then you need an unlimited service as you would use up the 1GB or 2GB on capped services pretty quickly.
Pipex http://www.solo.pipex.com/ are offering free connection, free modem and first 3 months for ?14.99 (?23.44 afterwards) for their 1MB service, which is a good offer. You are tied to them for 12 months, but could then migrate. The connection/modem/discount saves you about ?130.

Re: Broadband
Been with Nildram for several years with no probs - about ?25 for 2mb. They do have a 50GB d/load limit but only between 8am - midnight. Leave your PC downloading overnight and its uncapped. Quite reasonable compared with some other ISPs. Those few ISPs that don't have limits will in the future i believe. Also bear in mind that all the heavy downloaders will be on the unlimited services which could slow the network down.

Re: Broadband
I have been with pipex for a year or so and they are great, no downtime that I have noticed, I am on 2mb now, when i joined (and i thought it was still the same) there was no 12 month contract. would definatly recomend them, also if you need support the people on the phone are english, if you phone bt's support it is in India!

Sorry Buttsie, but I,m steaming into the 21st century, as my Pal Bigshow points out...Strewth! and he,s a man wot knows his onions, why I bet his feet dont even smell! I know the nostalgia of the 56k, I know what it,s like to wait 4 weeks for a photo of Carols baps to d/load, I know I,ll miss that toilet flush, sink emptying sound of the dial up, but we all have to move on, mind you I,ll sample the dial up tone, and trigger it every time I open the laptop, just so I can listen to it for old times sake, and I,ll think of you, sat round your billy can eating vegamite butties, and waiting for your fav porn star picture to arrive by steam..
