German fans hijack Wembley vote

German football fans have been voting to name the bridge at the new Wembley Stadium after Dietmar Hamann who scored the last goal at the old stadium.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone had asked people to post suggestions for the bridge's name on www.lda.gov.uk/wembley.

And German fans are taking it as an opportunity to pay back the English for beating them in the 1966 World Cup finals at the stadium.

The final shortlist of names is due to be presented on March 21 and German newspapers are urging readers to visit the site over the next week to cast their votes for Hamann "in tribute to the player who scored the last goal in the old stadium".

The German move follows news the Australians are reportedly trying a similar thing, with an email circulating calling on Aussies to vote for the bridge to be named after former rugby captain John Eales.
