Check the book. It will say either that it takes DVD-R or DVD+R discs. You may even have one that will record on both, but that's less likely.

Hi Revo
Well DVD Recorders are now fairly simple. If it just states DVDR then it uses DVD-Recordable discs or it will show the DVD+R for DVD+Recordables.
It is fairley simple in that Toshiba & Panasonic etc use DVDR "DVD-R" and Philips stands alone using DVD+R and Gen 2 Sony can use either. The minus symbol doesnt realy apply now as what used to be DVD-R is now known as DVDR seeing as it's the promiment format.
When buying your discs you'll find RITEK A Grade works best on DVDR but on DVD+R it's Verbaitom.
If you want to know more please ask but I hope you brought a Panasonic DMR range as they go forever

You can transfer footage to DVD from ANY camcorder, via the phono (round connectors) on the back. I think it is AV4 channel on these Panasonic recorders. It does not have to be a DVD camcorder or even a digital camcorder. The best picture quality would be seen if you used a digital camcorder of miniDV or Digital8 format and connected it to the DVD recorder through a firewire connection. The Panasonic base model does not come with a firewire connector, but all the others do.
The only reason for ever wanting a DVD camcorder is if you want to watch what you have recorded straight away by popping the DVD straight into the palyer, they are not designed for copying over to full size discs, although that can be do albeit with a loss of quality.
DVD video is compressed. Digital8 and miniDV record uncompressed video.
By recording on a Digital8 or miniDV camcorder and transferring to DVD you are only compressing the footage once.
By recording on DVD camcorder that records it compressed then copying it over to a full size DVD compresses it again. Thats 2 compressions resulting in a lower quality. Only way to keep the full quality of the original would be to copy it by actually putting the miniDVD into a computer and doing it digitally.
Please bear in mind that you can connect analog camcorders to your Panasonic recorder, and even in this day and age, some older analog camcorders like professional Hi8, or S-VHS, or Betacam cameras can still achieve better results than bottom of the range digital ones that are on sale now.

is this going to be the same as betamax versus vhs? if so, is + or - beta?
