Sad sad news

Gave a lot of great artists their first radio airplay and was panned for doing so.

Bad News... Top bloke, an influence and inspiration to generations. A big loss to radio and to music.
We don't realise how old some of that generation are, cos they don't seem "old", but at least he died happy having done the things he wanted to do with the people he liked, and having made many others happy.

...certainly more worthy of a "minutes silence" than any of the recent victims

A minute's "..............."

Shame.

Top bloke. Saturday morning Radio 4 will never be the same.

Sympathies to Sheila.

John Peel was bigging up Sabbath and Floyd early in their careers (As well as so many other bands) so I always had time for the guy. He always worth listening to on any subject, a great guy who will be sadly missed.

One Scouser who will be sadly missed. Genuinelly terrific bloke who had the foresight to play unsigned bands and give them a start. His weekly shows were played in Hong Kong for ex-pats and where I discovered punk before his show was dropped for playing Sex Pistols.
His TV appearances like 'Grumpy Old Men' as well as voice overs always made you smile
RIP John.........you are with some great company 'up there'

There are more than a few musicians who owe this man big. He played them when no other station would give them air time. A major loss without a doubt.

At best; possibly the person who has been most "important/influencial" in popular music without ever playing a note....and at worst...ONE of the most.

Sad day indeed, always found him very likeable on television and epitomised something few people can maintain - "keeping it real"....His influence on getting bands over the years noticed cannot be denied because in turn those bands became revolutions. Not to mention the 1000s of bands he gave their first airing to who went on to further success without stamping their place on history.

He gave the UK Nirvana, and the whole Nirvana thing kicked off in England too. Ive heard the Smiths, punk, reggae, and the ones you guys mentioned....thats quite a CV

RIP

Great to see everyone who is normally sceptical and bilious respecting the man. Shame he didnt get to pass away peacefully
