This morning my pc screen decided it had had enough, picture got darker & darker & eventually faded away. It is less than 2 years old & cost a packet when new, (its a flat screen tft thingy). Does anyone know if I can get it repaired anywhere or has anybody any experience of these things going into meltdown??

If its less than 2 years old surely its still within its warranty ?

Or was it ordered from the back of a lorry ?

May just be the back light , if its out of warranty take it apart and check.

if it's a fault with the monitor then the shop is obliged to repair it regardless of warranty.

Under the sale of goods regulations you have the right to have it repaired or replaced if a fault appears within 6 years and it is reasonable for the goods to last that long.

Should be easliy within this scope for a monitor

I agree that the most common fault for a TFT that isn't DOA is a blown backlight, another possibility is the PSU but your symptons indicate a bulb problem.

Most TFTs have in the wordings allowed numbers of dead pixels and sometimes number of hours for the backlight bulb, so even if you are inside your warranty you may not be covered (although as an example my IBM has 3 years inc backlight).

If it is in warranty you may have to pay shipping to / from the manufacturer or supplier (depending on T&Cs) which could easily negate the value of your TFT.

If you are out of warranty you may be able to fix it yourself or pay for somebody else to fix it, but given the dramatic drop in price of TFTs I would expect it will make more sense to simply buy a new one.
