Asda do the Pacific DVD-1002 for about 40 quid that so far has played pretty much everything I have thrown at it (vcd, s-vcd, cdr, cdrw, drd+r, dvd-r, dvd+rw, dvd-rw) - only downside is its a bit ugly looking but for 40 quid you cant go far wrong!

I have one of those. It's not too bad in looks imho. I could not agree more about the amount of stuff you can play on it

I bought a batch of the "Platinum" discs and couldn't record on half of them. They refused to play on a lot of machines as well.
I also bought a couple of Alba DVD players from Index (Littlewoods) for ?29.75 and they've played everything thrown at them.
How 'bout a divx/DVD player??

I bought two of the Yakumo XL2 players from Amazon the other week. They're ?35 each (delivered), are multi-region straight from the box, PAL/NTSC, S-video or RGB via SCART, opitcal outputs for audio and have played all DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs (with bookset at DVD+R and not DVD-ROM) without hesitation.
Highly recommended.
Ratso.
