Substitute / White knight

Hi all,
I'm not interested in becoming a pornstar or acting but wass wondering if in the UK industry, guys are sometimes required to attend the shooting of a film in case the actors have a problem (ie. cannot come, or come in too small quantity....). Basically are substitutes part of the game ?
If so, I would be interested in being a double. If this does exist, could someone tell how to proceed to apply and where ?
