Security Services

At present there is an enquiry into the Security Services by Lord Butler. This is concerned with the faulty intelligence provided leading up to the 2003 Iraq war. What does seem to have been swept under the carpet for more than a decade is their apparent failure to predict the collapse of the former Soviet Union. The question now needs to be asked if, after the death of Stalin, the USSR was ever the threat to the West they were supposed to be?

Until the end of Brezhnev, yes.
Under Andropov, maybe.
After that, probably not.

Probably not but having said that any country that possesses a Nuclear Stockpile is dangerous

It seems to me that since the break up of the U.S.S.R. they have become more of a threat

The story about Tranistria(Eastern Moldova) being a Corrupt State that is making and selling arms to the highest bidder9according to interpole) like North Korea is a scary scenario if true.

They haven't been able to prove anything as yet due to the rampant corruption on the Ukranian border. It was said that the entire Border patrol was replaced in a day due to corruption

Only a matter of time before something really deadly gets into the terrorsts hands IMHO

cheers

.......is that the same Gordievsky who relies upon rehashing Cold-War politics for a living?
Slight conflict of interest, there........

Do you mean the Garlic and Thyme-flavoured Radical Breakaway sect, or the Lemony Thai-grass Conservative faction? You can't expect me to properly answer a question couched in such vague terms.
And the kippers: boneless or not? The latter were always more prone to terrorist action, as in the notorious 1979 Whiting, Pollack and Associated Codfish attacks in Viking and South Utsire..........the after-effects of which are still keenly felt at Billingsgate, and that little fishmongers in West Pilchard Street, Grimsby.
