Believe in God ?

Just wondering how many of you geezers believe in God ? I am most definately NOT religeous - I really think you have to come to this subject entirely on your own terms with your own understanding of what HE is all about. Fans of smutty pics and filums are usually protrayed as mindless idiots with the depth of of a footpath puddle.
I think this is very misleading. I am the biggest porno fan you could possibly have, yet when I see the wonders of nature, pick up a baby, listen to music, think about the universe, taste my favourite foods, watch my friends 3 year old playing with pots and pans and think that we can basically dig things out of the ground and make them into space ships and go to the moon, well, I am convinced there is something more to us then a collection of chemicals.
Yeah, OK so I'm fairly pissed - but that doesn't mean I'm not speaking my mind. Any thoughts ?

I dont directly believe in any religious God but I can't accept this trail of coincidences that supposedly led us to modern life in 2004.
"To suppose that the eye could have been formed by natural selection, seems I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree." - Charles Darwin
"I could prove God statistically; take the human body alone; the chance that all the functions of the individual would just happen, is a statistical monstrosity." - George Gallup
Can you see anything at all on Earth that didnt have some kind of builder, creator or designer...?
Having said all this I dont think people are singled out to be given talents such as art, music or whatever. Its almost always hereditory so I dont buy all this "God-given" schmuck....trust me im the most talented person i know
just kidding

Why not? 'Coincidence' is usually just a pat explanation for forces that we can't see, or don't understand yet.

True, but not necessary- the only initial phase necessary to give a selective advantage is the ability to distinguish high light-intensity (indicating food, or danger, etc) from low.
And any instrument-maker will tell you that the organic eye is a terrible piece of equipment in design-terms- wrong materials, amazing it works at all- not much evidence there for a 'watchmaker'.

Well, as the father of the notoriously unreliable opinion-poll, I think we can discount HIS credentials immediately.......and you don't postulate all functions evolving simultaneously, you calculate the probablility for each individual event.

Only humans have 'design'. With Conran, not necessarily a plus.........

exactly. although the human body may seem like an amazingly complex piece of work, it is littered with design faults.
For example, why do we need to brush our teeth? why do we gradually lose our eyesight/hearing etc...?
If all this was God's work, why didn't he do a better job? If anything, humans have learned to improve how our bodies function (no i don't mean tit-jobs!) over time, life expectancy increasing, for example.

I too have often wondered why human beings have not been given a set of teeth designed to last three score years and ten. My dog, who is coming towards the end of her life, still has an absolutely perfect set. Can anyone suggest why humans were not given teeth designed to last a lifetime?

in all probability the modern diet is a major cause in the decay...also we really werent supposed to live this long whatever you can argue against it..

Religon was created as a means to control weak people. Nothing more - nothing less. Anyone with a brain just doesn't need it.

My problem with religion is that in dozens of countries around the world kids are not allowed to make up their own minds.
The major world religious groups - Christianity / Islam / Judaism / Buddism / Hinduism etc. teach their children traditional beliefs from the day they are born.
This is not true belief - this is how millions of people are indoctrinated and while the vast majority are harmless some fanatics such as suicide bombers take their beliefs to obscene lengths.
Fair enough if a mature youngster decides to adopt a faith but let them make up their own minds and stop this indoctrination process.
At the end of the day there's only one way we'll discover if God exists so let's hope all forumites have many years to go before D-Day.
