Total destruction

I heard an ex computer hacker turned security expert on a radio discussion programme one morning this week. It was said that although files are deleted they can still be found. How I wonder.? Is there a way to permanentlty delete stuff from your computer short of taking out the hard drive and destroying it?
Many thanks to those who responded to my last post about downloading.

Why? have you got some classified information on you puter, like a TM hardcore movie?, in short there is no way to 'completely' destroy all info without taking your hard drive out, and crushing it with a sledgehammer, then throwing it in the Atlantic.
Or if you just want to make life difficult for people, try BC wipe, set to industrial strength, things like 'History Kill' are a waste of time and money.

When you "delete" a file, you simply remove the link, it's still there on your hard disk and it stays there until your hard disk is full. Then, in theory, it can be overwritten by new data.
