The Complete Works of Shakespeare.

A man cannot consider himself educated until he has read some of the Bard.
We have need of you again, great king.

before he wrote 'captain corelli's mandolin', which came high in the big read - (and trust me it's much better than the film), he wrote his excellent south american trilogy.

- the war of don emmanuels neither parts,

- senor vivo and the coca lord,

- the troublesome offspring of cardinal guzman

To advocate contemporary lit., I'd say anything from James Kelman or Kazuo Ishiguro, but if you want specifics, then it's 'A Disaffection' from the former and 'The Unconsoled' from the latter.

(Oh, and if you want an 'up all night' thriller that isn't the size of a housebrick, then Brian Moore's 'The Colour of Blood' remains unbeaten)

Whilst in hospital in 1989, I read a Jeffrey Archer book, Kane and Abel, and it was excellent, and I DO Mean that. Made no difference to me that he was a Tory and now an ex-prisoner
