well i figured everyone will have something to say about it, and im sure ill forget to click "reply to message" so its best if i start it....

2 fuckings hours of self promotion, self important talk about their careers all to try and promote sport to people who arent already interested - a waste of time.

not to mention the whole concept of "personality" its basically the award for whoever has the best year not someone with a genuinely warm personality....alright here comes the backlash :P

The term "sports personality" is surely the ulimate oxmoron?

Maybe it should be re-named "sporty person that I have seen on the telly (that I can remember the name of)" recently?

Doesn't quite have the same ring about it somehow...

Let's award it to someone who's been in the news in the last four weeks. Certainly representative of an entire year's worth of hard work, training and results. Oh yes.

And personality? Please remember who last year's winner was.

well i watched it. if it pisses you off then why sit through 2 hours of it?
there's always the cynical view of things like this afterwards. personally, being a sports fan myself i thought it was a pretty good show, it's amazing to see so many sports stars from today and yesteryear all under one roof, particularly people that i admired while growing up.

i don't think 'promoting sport' is a factor, what's wrong with simply looking back on the sporting year and awarding people where IMO it was well deserved? you can't complain that it was a pure 'pats on the back for us brits' type of event as it honours sports stars from all over the globe.

and as for the whole debate on personality, i think perhaps its misinterpreted. its not necessarily just how personable or how funny someone is, johnny wilkinson is a pretty dull individual in my opinion, a nice enough guy but a sports personality in the mould of say, nigel mansell or michael owen. but i think its his 'role model' status that probably won it for him. he's a perfect example to other aspiring sports stars of how to conduct yourself and how dedicated one should be.

well, you wanted a backlash.... although it seems my view is in the minority here so i'll probably get hit by all those 'copy and pasters'.
either you like these kind of events or you don't, there's no point trying to convince others any different i suppose.

well said goldenballs but i didnt really sit through all of it, about the first half an hour properly and i was online at the time so was only half watching. i just find all the concepts involved really cringeworthy - the bad jokes, the "next year im gonna be ..." stuff that no one else there gives a shit about they just want them to get on with the award which usually is very predictably the person who had the best few weeks prior to the ceremony

and btw deuce what u said in ur post about not caring - thats why i love u aussies because u think like that :) then again u do have the ARIAs hehe

I heard, as I didn't watch it, that the BBC didn't use ITV's pictures but used OLD footage and graphics from a PS2 game.
If THATS the case, it sounded a piss poor show

the use of a PS2 game was actually done quite well, i don't think it was just because they had nothing else (afterall, they had footage of the rugby world cup that was also on itv). they had a 'virtual' suzy perry talking through the events of the year, i guess it must be a feature of the particular game. i'm not a motorsports fan but i thought it made a change from just going into the audience and shoving a microphone in someone's face.
one of the best segments was during the golf section (just the mention of the g word is bound to cause a flood of 'boring' replies), they got dirty den to talk us through the main talking events of the golfing calander, all shot in albert square, the theme being that he had lost all his money placing bets on the major tournaments, all of which were won by suprise winners. only good if you like golf and dirty den i suppose.

at the end of the day, i see sports personality of the year as nothing more than a round up of the sporting year, and as i've said, being into sports myself, i find it an enjoyable 2 hours of TV. I'd certainly rather watch that than a film (unless its porn obviously). I watched it for all the spoting highlights, not because i wanted a laugh, not everything on TV is there to entertain us, if you want comedy watch The Office.
