Anyone see the program on thursday night about the failed coup in Venezuela a couple of years ago. President Chavez was the first president to come from an ordinary working class family and was apparently loved by the people because his policies were aimed to redistribute the wealth mostly gained from their oil exports (3rd largest oil exporter in the world).
Well, the rich elite didn't like the sound of this, neither did the US regime as the price of a barrel of oil may rise. Working allegedly together, using the private tv channels they broadcast lies. e.g. President Chavez was mentally ill, he was a murderer, his father was a murderer, he's a communist, our country will end up like Cuba under him, his policies don't work etc etc.
Then they orchestrated a march to the oil refinery (Cordona the coup leader), then marched them to the Presidential Palace which was surrounded by thousands of President Chavez supporters. When the two opposing sides met, rooftop snipers shot dead a number of marchers/supporters. People in venezuela carry guns so some supporters shot back. The private tv channels owned and run by the rich only showed edited footage of President Chavez supporters doing the shooting in self defence, and not themselves ducking behind walls to take cover form the snipers in between firing.
To cut a long story short, Cordona managed to convince the people and military Chavez was evil, and with the help of the military took over the country, with ex-president Chavez being flown away to an undisclosed location in custody to face criminal prosecution for crimes against humanity. Cordona was sworn in and repealed all Chavez's policies, the supreme court, ombudsmen etc basically turning the country into a dictatorship...all with US backing and praise. The coup orchestrators then went on tv gloating how they had planned the operation.
But by the second day of the Cordona reign the people had started to learn the truth, the state broadcaster channel 8 signals had stopped being jammed, and they broadcast the true footage of the shooting incident.
Some people then wen't out on the streets protesting for the return of their President Chavez. On the third day, the streets were flooded with people all demanding the return of President Chavez.
No one wanted or liked Cordona, and in the presidential palace the presidential guards turned against Cordona and captured the palace. Chavez's vice president was sworn in as president live on the state broadcaster, who appealed to the military to support him and bring back Chavez, they did, and he was sworn in again as President, and is still President of Venezuela now.
The tv program was made by Irish journalists who were doing a fly-on-the wall programme of Chavez, they filmed everything that happened, both inside and out the presidential palace before/during/after the coup.
Alleged American involvement:
(i) Colin Powell/George Tenet - both broadcasting Chavez a bad man etc.
(ii) State broadcaster was jammed during crucial coup period so they couldn't put out the truth (possible CIA technical support?)
(iii) The captured President Chavez was flew out of the country to an undisclosed location on a plane that was registered in the good old USA.
(iv) Cordona (who incidentally looked like your archetypal columbian drugs barron), flew off to columbia, then settled in miami.
