Not sure about who was the best Band overall but you would be hard pressed to find a better song than "English Rose" by The Jam, and that from a Scotsman.

Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon would be my choice, just tack onto the end of it Shine on You Crazy Diamond and I would be in heaven.

London Calling for me. EVERY car I have owned ALWAYS had a cassette or now a CD of this album. 24 years on, still sounds perfect

No doubting The Jams unique sound & cutting lyrics
Still can't get the lyrics from a Town Called Malice out of my head
Been trying for nigh on 20 years with no success
As for the Beatles.....some might rate them as the best but then thats just subjective bollocks...everybody likes something different
To say a band is numero uno because they wrote so many songs that became hit singles is baloney IMO
If I were on a desert Island I'd be listening to Madness
Seems fitting knowing that I would eventually go Mad
cheers
