I have started an online petition to gather support for a campaign to change the current UK laws regarding where R18 DVDs and videos can be sold from - please show your support by signing the petition and, just as importantly, by spreading the URL to everyone in the UK you know who may be interested in signing. I am aiming for 10,000 signatures so please help me by signing and getting everyone you know to sign and together lets try and change the antiquated and unfair laws which are holding this industry back within the UK.

The law states that R18 DVDs can only be sold from a licenced sex shop and not via any other medium including the internet and mail order - the postal address is where the domain and web hosting are registered.

Unfortunately petitions have no effect in a one party state, this isn't Switzerland or California, where petitions can change the law eventually.

Very admirable what you are attempting though I feel on the whole you?ll just be wasting your time and remember there are areas of the industry that actually like the R18 set up as it keeps the big fish swimming! Remember If Mr Tony daint listen to all the anti war loby and the whole country that protested in the fuel conflict then a petition about porn wouldn?t even be read. You need to get sneaky and note that they do get pretty pissed about being whopped in the pocket so why not get some of the industry united to have a go on the unfair and restrictive trading front? After all that?s the only reason we now have R18!

Never forget that, amazing as it may seem now, the law in Britain could still be tightened.

After the court case that led to R18, the politicians could have brought in new legislation to ban hardcore porn and didn't.

A different lot may want to do this. I well remember (from the dim and distant past) how magazines got tamer in the early 80s.

Something to think on.

At some time, we need positive legislation to actually legalise R18, including taking a view on mail order distribution (though, there is the balancing argument that some councils rather like the money they get for sex shop licences).

I don't really want the law changed and I am a producer. The whole DVD thing is gone the market is flooded and everyones titles are pirated to death on all the online auctions and every sunday market. I want to see and end to DVD and all the grief that came with it. I did predict this and lets hope for the producers sake the new IPTV network we are creating will save them. Producer direct to punters TV even live thats the way to go. Our set-top box arrives in 2 weeks and that should alow us to demo it to all. BT estimate 12million people on IPTV by 2007.
OFCOM are not going to allow R18's on TV there is no indication they will and loads that they wont. The Europeen approach where the shops take the trading standard and the Video Recordings act to Europe wont work because mail order is ilegal in many other Euro countries like Germany, in fact porn on the web is ilegal in Germany so your are hardly going to get any support in Europe. Time to wake up and work it out. BT will give you up to 2mb after the 28th of this month for about ?15 and buisness users get 4mb in two months. I have had a consumer 15mb board in my hand that BT have ready to go in exchanges and the even tested a 70mb board last month...BT want to sell you movies and a TV service, we have the technoligy to give you live porn right now, thats the answer not DVD,s
