retirement age?

Recent letters in another place have been discussing the age of a very well known, loved & respected adult star who has reportedly recently retired
" to spend more time with her family", it would seem that the lady in question is 40/41 years of age & I wonder at what age models consider it appropriate to 'retire', do they actually retire or do they move move on to other genres? What events trigger retirement, the realisation that you can't beat the forces of nature or when the phone stops ringing with offers of work?
There are undoubtedly a lot of very attractive women over age 40 who could still make a good living in the mainstream but it must be difficult competing for work with the horde of late teens/early 20 year olds that are about today.
The adult entertainment business is the only profession I know of where you start at the top & work your way downwards.
