i agree, Badmotorfingers in my cd player again tonight, superunknowns the most commercially popular then Down on the Upside ...but i prefer Louder than Love (before breaking mainstream album) also try ultramega ok or screaming life as their earliest stuff but get A-Sides if you are unsure. BADMOTORFINGER ALL THE WAYYYY

I reckon Soundgarden did give a pretty good range - every album sounded different (but still familiar) and there was a lot of experimentalism courtesy of Kim on guitar.
As for being amazed, im not amazed as such by the musicianship because I can play every note by all my my fav bands and the bands of those eras, what Im fascinated/amazed by is the sheer songwriting quality...its way outta my league whereas flipping the coin to your generation the Van Halen/ jimmy page amazement is probably because of the originality/musicianship but in my opinion the quality is er "different"...ill stick to the cream/kinks/sabbath inspired riffs ne day

I never said anything negative about any of those artists you mentioned in fact I have unconditional respect for them all - I know how difficult it is just sitting with a guitar and trying to be different and thats nowadays where everythings done, it takes major balls to stick your neck out with a song like Eruption.
What eddie van halen has done for the guitar is probably the reason why he should/could be considered the 2nd best ever behind Jimi (because of what he did rather than complexity)...I never said Van Halen were basic I mean beside the normal riffs the rest of its waaay outta my league and EXTREMELY influencial as you said.
As for audioslave, well I was listening to it earlier and lets put it this way if they were a new band people would listen more carefully and would find the melodies (surely Cornells real talent?) are way above everything else new out there.
As it is, its the combination of two of the great more influencial bands from the early 90s and thus the guitar parts are pale in comparison to the sheer quality of RATM's debut or any soundgarden BUT its still a damn good album if you listen to it enough. Cochise is obviously got the melody from Whole Lotta Love/ You Need Loving but thats ok because its still really good.
Personal favourite - Like A Stone, weak guitar but fantastic melody, this song was going round my head after the first listen and spent ages trying to work out what it was
My main advice for people is to treat it like a new record by a new band otherwise itll be disappointing . Enjoy !

hey bimmercat, yeh I play guitar and regrettably am in the unfortunate position of being a 'struggling musician', even though im not struggling lol. I hate all that shit and the pretenses everyone has about it so I wont dribble on about it...But yeh now you cans ee why im obsessed by quality rather than virtuosity - im pretty good but wont be challenging your boy steve vai any time soon
talking of which i might use my ?20 vouchers ive got to get fire garden if its realllly worth it, always good to be openminded...
