Editorial bias??? The movie was made from a script! Its not a documentary cobbled together to make some kind of narrative and turned out the way it did.

Just read this about the director of Boogie Nights. Interesting that he grew up in the San Fernando Valley

Firstly you said you watched half an hour! The film's running time from memory is over two and half hours so basing your judgement on this snippet is ridiculous.

The film focuses on the demise of the golden age, the switch from film to cheaply produced video when things started to change and go bad for many. The start of the film is all rosy and good fun but the story, for dramatic reasons takes a turn, I hate when people criticise fiction for not being a documentary. But saying that, many of the stories within the film are inspired by real stories from that time.

And to say it was badly made is an absolute joke, although early in his career P.T Anderson is one of the finest modern auteurs. Get the Region 1 DVD and listen to his commentary, he's from that area and made the short the Dirk Diggler Story before expanding it to feature so knows his shit and did his research.

Oh, and this film is in my top three!

Shawshank Redemption is a truly great film Dave. A is the Green Mile made by the same director but Shawshank pips the edge on that one

The Rambo franchise really trivialised FirstBlood which at best was good but they went on to make stinking amounts of money and made Stallone a hotter property than just Rocky so I cant blame him.

That shit made him a star but I know what you mean. To be fair, at the time it was an enjoyable bit of nonsense which I can say about most films but crap is still a bit harsh because those movies are made by world leading talents making that kind of thing to make money so it served its purpose.

The film I saw last night was Rambo 4, strangely just called Rambo (which is what the second film was usually referred to in conversation, although it's full name was longer). Why it was made I do not know, the first three films have Stallone in his 30's/early 40s, then they wait something like 20 years to make this one. Stallone is 62 years old in this film! It was awful, and very similar to the second and third films. According to what I read online, Stallone is threatening to make Rambo 5!
