Presumably 500 years ago, you'd have been on the "earth is flat" side of the debate.

You can't really expect scientists to know anything about science! Oil execs, car execs, Jeremy Clarkson, blokes down the pub, the Sun newspaper - these are the real experts; right, Flat Eric?

I think you've confused science with religion.

Apparently a Bill is being proposed that will require cuts of at least 3% a year carbon dioxide emissions in the UK, now this isnt a bad thing and has the backing of two thirds of MPs so this could happen the trouble is this goverment will just tax to the hilt as away to achieve it instead of looking at other ways.

Agree - punishing poorer people isn't the right way. The government needs to hit the big card drivers first, increase air travel taxes, provide grants for home insulation, encourage smaller car use, and (maybe most important) invest heavily in providing cheap public transport, which would benefit the poor.

Well SB, for someone who's constantly rabbiting on about how "gullible" and "naive" we are if we believe everything we're told by the Government and "experts" (I seem to recall you putting forward the view that 9/11 was an inside job and one big conspiracy by your much-reviled 'New World Order'), the way you apparently "tow the Party line" and accept everything you're told by the "experts" with regard to the subject of climate change amazes me, quite frankly. Sir Nick Stern is after all one of Gordon Browne's key hatchet-men.
Most people accept that the global climate is changing - for reasons that are both natural and man-made. The main argument is about the rate and about the main causes (natural vs. man-made). But there's also a lot of hysteria being whipped up about it by various individuals, groups and parties with political and / or ideological agendas. And what myself and others are taking issue with in this thread is all the scare-mongering and the way in which the Blairy Bunch is jumping on the bandwagon and milking people's genuine concerns in order to impose yet more taxes and nannying. Read the thread properly and you'll see that's the beef is of most people who've joined in this discussion - not that "there's no such thing as global warming".
Fact is the government don't really give a fuck about climate change. If they did, they'd be doing things like giving 90% grants for people to install solar panels in their roofs or to reinsulate their homes. They'd invest properly - and massively - in the public transport infrastructure (nationally I mean - not just in London in time for the Olympics). And instead of ploughing squillions into the much-trumpeted "pay-per-mile - twice over" (I say "- twice over" because we already pay per mile in the form of fuel duty), they'd be investing that money in alternative energy programmes such as wind power and possibly giving financial assistance to promote more research into developing efficient vehicles that run on methane, electricity or other "green" fuels.

And Peter Hitchens on Question Time last week, showing he was unaware that depletion of the ozone layer contributed to global warming. Unfortunately no one else on the panel had the knowledge to point out his ignorance.

Spot-on Eric!
They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?
