Lara,
The figures were massaged and the real figure was over a million! I was one!

Warren,
What difference does "consistent economic growth since the 1950s" make to the public? Does it improve their quality of life? What difference does it make if the British state are the second biggest arms dealers in the world and sell more weapons to obtain more economic growth?
"Growth" cannot be infinite and is like a cancer killing us all!

Warren,
The only way economic growth can be infinite is to destroy capitalism and start again as history proves with the First and Second World Wars. After 1945 in Germany we had the the "wunderwirtschaft" miracle and the rebuilding of a new capitalist economy.
He who ignores history is condemned to repeat the mistakes of the last generation. Beware the coming economic depression when the oil runs dry!

If you are going to make claims like that, please furnish your evidence.
Otherwise my reaction is: "Stop talking bollocks."

People moved - because they can really.
People are moving about more than they used to. Brits to Spain, French to Britain, Germans to everywhere.
To look at Britain in isolation, and to think that increased emigration is a sure of a declining country gives a false picture, unless you think that increased emigration from most other developed countries means that everywhere is on the slide.
