My old man (who was ex-army) reckoned that wog simply meant Wiley Oriental Gentleman and I was told by someone else Worker Of the Government in some of the colonial countries. So not essentially racist .

Something similar, apparently the word 'wop' is not a rude word for a foreigner. It refers to the immigrants who did not have the right paperwork - it stands for 'without papers'. The 'wop's (without papers) were told to form a seperate line at immigration.

When I was an immigration officer, nearly 40 years ago, I worked at an airport control area with an old boy who'd been a POW in WW2. When he'd finished with one passenger he thought nothing of calling over to the airline girl who was sending us passengers, "Send me another wog!". If the powers that be ever said anything to him, he'd just turn off his hearing aid.
