Hi Snakey, Vista is alright if you give yourself all the rights, and disable a few restrictive things, but 20kbps-250kbps on a 2.2mb connection is slow, here is a link for setting up port forwarding for a bt router just as an example, we use multiple routers for both my business's and personal stuff
this is for shareaza , maybe not for you but for anyone else thats getting poor performance, if set up correctly, you should be obtaining from 350kbps to 1.8mb no problem, this works for xp and vista, but you need to leave the windows firewwall on, but hey, if your happy with your set up, why worry!

Thanks very much for the post which is appreciated as always.

Setting up the static IP address from the www.portforward.com page you posted is fairly simple to do but you said in one of your posts that you need to tell your modem/router what port that you are using. How do I do that?

I have also downloaded Shareaza. Is there anything I need to change in there?

I am running XP with SP2 and I use Norton Firewall with the Windows Firewall permanently disabled and I did create a systems restore point before I started in case anything goes wrong.

Sorry if I sound a bit dumb as I'm ok with a computer but not so great when it gets a bit complicated.

Yeah, my current setup is running nice most of the times, as I have a 2.2Mb connection, I would love a faster download rate.

I contacted my ISP, they gave me some links, including a BT Broadband connection test, the rate at which my connection is running is set correct for my ISP.

The download rate I'm getting (Max approx 250Kbps), is the default max value set by my ISP, so I don't see any way of increasing that D/L Rate.

Ed, you need to go to your routers home page, ie 192.168.0.0 or if your using netgear or linksys go the yor login page then you have the option to configure the router, you need to access virtual server page, then port forwarding, you then have the option to add a application, type shareaza or whatever p2p, then .....enter the info and thats it.

IP Address Protocol Port IP Address Port
shareaza ALL TCP 46346 192.168.1.2 46346
shareaza ALL UDP 46346 192.168.1.2 46346

Then in the shareaza settings, just enter the same ip address and type the same port number in.

I'm using a wired broadband connection at the moment as my router went tits up last week.

Thanks for your help mate but as I thought this is a bit too advanced for me and I'm not really sure what I'm doing so I think I'll stop before I fuck anything up.

Thanks again for your help which is appreciated.

Theres mention of there being downsides to not sharing

Would this entail some sort of online registration via a licence similar to DRM?

cheers
