I went with my mum about 3 years ago to sample the St. Patrick's Day festivities in London's west end. Seemed to enjoy herself a lot especially when she didn't once have to pay for a drink in Waxy O'Conner's pub, although she did baulk at the idea of wearing a large green Guinness hat.
By the way, she and my dad came to this country from the West Indies in 1961, worked right up to their retirement in the Mars factory in Slough (dad) and the NHS (mum) and I asked her if she felt that she and my dad had contributed to the general economic and social decline in this country over the past 50 years. I won't tell you her reply as there's been enough bad language in this thread already.
Incidentally I met my current partner watching The Pogues at the Kentish Town Forum St.Patrick's Day 1988 and if memory serves me well I wasn't the only black face there either.
