They made some brilliant albums, though. Abbey Road is my favourite. Unbeatable!

It didn't stop them being best sellers did it? The White Album got mixed reviews but is still in the top 10 selling albums ever in the USA. Abbey Road got mixed reviews but is still in the top 20 albums ever for sales worldwide.

They were obviously huge sellers, I'm not sure what proportion of the sales followed the immediate release of the album and how many came later, but it obviously sold well upon release. As far as defining an album as a classic just because it sells well, and some people do this, it's woth remembering than in 1969 Fleetwood Mac sold more records than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones COMBINED, and I don't think the album/albums Fleetwood Mac sold that year are held up as 'classics'.
