As was the intention of the last government when it came to terrorist SUSPECTS of course.

Agree entirely. The woeful anti-democratic control order regime was brought in by the Labour government when the House of Lords ruled that the practice of holding foreign terror suspects in Belmarsh prison without charge or trial was unlawful.

The coalition came to power planning to scrap them but have done virtually nothing.

Quelle surprise!

My my David - you have done your research. Unfortunately, at least two of your "innocent" cases were anything but.

Timothy Evans almost certainly did murder his wife. And the Taylor sisters certainly murdered Alison Shaughnessy. Just because they were released (mostly because of abhorrent reporting by some tabloids) doesn't mean they were not guilty. See Bernard O'Mahoney's book on the case. Why should you take his word? Because like you he campaigned to get them freed, had an affair with one and then discovered a letter written to their solicitor in which they admitted their guilt. See Vhttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Dream-Solution-Murder- ... 32&sr=1-34>

Nah, just copied and pasted them from Wikipedia.

Unfortunately, at least two of your "innocent" cases were anything but.

Well even if that is so, there are sure to be cases which were miscarriages but never came to light. The basic point is unaltered and I note that many of the pro-capital punishment forumites just ignore it - innocent people get murdered by the state.

Sorry forgot to put in my post that I was referring to Max's feeling that it was sadder if it was someone who served the community.
I am not sure fat people neccesarily serve the community but thanks for the support!

I'm disappointed - you are usually so assiduous in your research/links.

Yes, there is a book by Andrew Rose pointing out that in several cases in which the "infallible" Sir Bernard Spilsbury gave evidence, the accused was almost certainly innocent but the pathologist's evidence sent them to the gallows.
