Perhaps he thought there would never be a financial crisis ever again, but there tends to be a major one at least once a generation, and one every 10 years is not rare.

Our Australian democrats(who once got 20% of the vote)did a similar thing with the Liberal/Conservative government by allowing a GST(Your VAT)to finally get through senate(house of legislation review where they held the balance of power).

After that they were never anything but a protest party who never got more than 1% of the vote
